Verifying proper filenames for config files on Windows computers

Frequently users will end up accidently misnaming their configuration files because of the Windows operating system's file management. This article explains how to properly name your files. These steps should be followed with your MicroSD inserted into a card reader so it is visible on the computer.

Windows, by default, hides the extension (last three letters after the '.') of known file types. So, since the '.TXT' extension is known, the file will be shown as YDEG. If you edit the name to be displayed as YDEG.TXT, you will have actually added an extra .TXT and in reality the file name will be YDEG.TXT.TXT. You can verify this by going to a command prompt.

You can open a command prompt window by opening the start menu by clicking in the lower left corner of your computer or pressing the Windows button on your keyboard. With the start menu open type "com" which should cause the Command Prompt shortcut to be displayed as the best match, as seen above.

With the command prompt now opened, you will need to change to the drive letter for your MicroSD card. The most common drive letter for the MicroSD will be D: or E:. On my demo computer, the SD card reader is E:.

With the card inserted into the computer and the command prompt open, I've first typed "e:" to change to the drive for the microSD card. I've then typed the "dir" command to list the directory of the current drive. You can see my file name is incorrect. It's "YDEG.TXT.TXT" instead of "YDEG.TXT".

To resolve this, I've used the "move" command. I typed "move YDEG.TXT.TXT YDEG.TXT" to change the filename. I'm specifying the current filename first, followed by the filename I want to change to. If I was configuring another device, like a YDES, I would instead be using YDES as the base file name. Hence, my command would look like this: "move YDES.TXT.TXT YDES.TXT".

Once the file is renamed, you can eject the card from the computer and insert it into the Yacht Devices product. You should now get three green blinks if the configuration is changed, or one green blink and two red blinks, if the configuration already matches what you have on the card.
